However, what many did not know is that the workaholic "Mayanga" as Mhlongo is popularly known in his township had already made up his mind about joining Orlando Pirates – the club he grew to love for one specific reason. He explains.

Like many youngsters growing-up in the township, Benson Mhlongo took part in street soccer in Alexandra.

turned up for amateur outfits Megawatt Park, Alexandra Parma and
SuperSport United juniors before playing competitive soccer with City
Sharks, Alexandra United (first division), and premiership sides Wits
