Happy Jele’s career started with a plastic ball in the dusty streets of Mhluzi Village, in Middelburg at the age of seven. Between the ages of 10 and 13 years-old, he played for Columbus FC, Inter Milan and Thushaganang Swallows before joining Promotional League campaigners Walter Stars.
Jele was very influential in helping Walter Stars to their Vodacom League status and his biggest break came when Stars played a friendly match against Orlando Pirates in 2006. Though his side narrowly lost the match 1-0 to Bucs, Happy must have done something right to catch our technical staff’s eye. He recalls: “I must have done something right against the much experienced Pirates side to impress their coaching staff.
